This will be an interesting test of WordPress's commitment to an open web. With 40% of the web running our software, what responsibility do we feel to respond to developments like this? And do we have appropriate decision-making structures to make that call?

Framing it as a security concern is understandable, but problematic. As several influential folks have noted already, 'security updates' are there to fix something that's demonstrably broken. People should feel able to apply them without (much) consideration.

To be clear, WordPress has not 'announced', or even yet agreed a plan to block Google's FLoC tracking technology. It's one user's suggestion. It appeals to many. But whether we should do it, and if so how, is under discussion. https://t.co/HaSfJHVWcp

FeedBurner is 'turning down most non-core feed management features' - by which it apparently means, turning off. Weird choice of words: why not just say 'off'? (Also, FeedBurner is still a thing.) https://t.co/2xIPVhvphu

I agree. Funnily enough, there's a current job ad for a head of communications for dot-com too. But the purpose is (or certainly should be) very different. https://t.co/Og2S9jFToE

Back on Reading bike track for the first time since August, and the first training group session since Sep 2019. Brutal session but a huge smile on my face throughout. Racing next week!

Can't help noticing that 5 of the 6 people making the go/no-go decision on (phase one) integration of Full Site Editing into WordPress 5.8 were employees of Automattic. https://t.co/D7DpcGvOkY

I'm delighted to learn that they're recruiting a Head of Marketing and Strategic Communications for WordPress-dot-org (ie, the open source project). But it's via a job inside Automattic - and for me, that's the wrong place for it. Wrong for the project, wrong for Automattic.

Not sure what's more surprising.

(a) To have an email from Google about FeedBurner after silence for years, or
(b) That the email is about updates rather than the closing of the service.
It wasn't a support request, more a plea to send an email (etc) notification when a membership is coming up for renewal, so we don't get unexpected charges by never-heard-of-them payment service providers on our credit cards. (I had to request a receipt manually.)
